No one really knows who Liberato is. The mysterious artist from Naples began releasing songs unannounced in 2017, fusing the Neapolitan "neomelodico" tradition with R&B, electro, and hip-hop influences, accompanied by elaborately produced music videos full of wondrous local romance, roses, and hooded wearers. After the release of the first two singles - all sung in Neapolitan, by the way - "Nova Maggio" (May 9) and "Tu t'e scurdat 'e me" (You forgot me), the next single "Gaiola Portafortuna" (a tribute to the cursed island of Gaiola in the Gulf of Naples) appeared on YouTube on September 19 and on music streaming services on September 22, 2017. The exact dates of the release symbolize the preoccupation with the history of Naples: they allude, on the one hand, to the feast day of San Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples, and, on the other, to the anniversary of the Castel Volturno massacre, in which the Camorra murdered six African immigrants. In 2020, Liberato composed the soundtrack for the Netflix film "Ultras," about the fan culture of the SSC Naples soccer club, on which 3D (Massive Attack member Robert Del Naja) and Gaika also collaborated. On May 9, 2021, the single "E Te Veng' A Piglià" (And I Come to You) was released, followed on June 22 by "Chiagne' ancora" (It's Still Raining), a collaboration with rappers Ghali and J Lord. As every year on May 9, Liberato traditionally released new material in 2022: the second album entitled "Liberato II" with previously unreleased tracks, flanked by accompanying YouTube videos. After an acoustic concert in July off the coast of the island of Procida, Liberato last performed at the Milano Rocks festival in Milan in front of 25,000 people.
